Education has been central to the aspirations of African-Americans. So as Waterloo as a Black community was being founded, both a church and a school were the center of the community. Waterloo Baptist Church served as the center of the community. Monday-Friday was the time for education - then desks were cleared by the students on Friday afternoon, for worship to commence on Sundays. The Waterloo school served as a community school as well as place where Black students attended from Amissvile, Orleans, and Turnbull.
